What’s Happening?

As the year comes to a close, Lives Lived Well celebrates 50 years of supporting individuals on the Gold Coast through Mirikai, a renowned residential rehabilitation service.

Founded in 1981 by the Gold Coast Drug Council, Mirikai has grown from a small brick house into a vital hub for substance use recovery.

Why It Matters?

This milestone reflects five decades of transformative impact, providing hope and practical solutions for individuals facing substance use challenges.

The enduring presence of Mirikai underscores its critical role in the community.

By the Numbers

  • 276 people received support through Mirikai’s residential rehabilitation program in 2023–2024, with a 95% average bed occupancy rate.

  • From January to June 2024, 96% of clients reported improved quality of life, and 98% reduced substance use within three months.

  • A Patient Experience Survey highlighted 97.6% satisfaction, with an average service rating of 4.65 out of 5.

Local Impact

Over 50 years, Mirikai has provided thousands of individuals with a structured, supportive environment to rebuild their lives.

Its six- to 12-week program equips clients with vital life skills and therapy, offering a pathway to recovery and reintegration into the community.

A Legacy of Transformation

Mirikai’s foundation by Dr Rob Richardson and the Gold Coast Drug Council in 1981 was “a visionary step,” according to Lives Lived Well CEO Mitchell Giles.

“We are grateful to Dr Rob Richardson, Mary Alcorn, and everyone involved in those early days for laying the foundations.”

Clinical Services Manager Vicky Mouatt, who has been with Lives Lived Well for 20 years, shared her personal journey: “I came here as a client myself and recovered here. Mirikai is an amazing place that helped change my life.”

Reflecting on the program’s impact, Ms Mouatt added, “It’s amazing when clients return years later to say hello and share how their lives have improved. Those moments are really special.”

She emphasised the organisation’s welcoming approach: “Whether it takes one treatment episode, two, or three, we want people to know they can come back and keep trying.”
