Boxing Day Test live: Steve Smith resumes century hunt on day two, Virat Kohli fined for Sam Konstas clash at MCG

Live: Boxing Day Test — Australia vs India

98th over – Mohammed Siraj is back into the attack

97th over – A slight delay as a streaker disrupts Bumrah’s over

Jon Healy profile image

Smith defends three balls and a member of the crowd has run onto the field. Looks like he almost made it to the pitch too.

SIX! Bumrah goes short and Smith hooks. The ball takes the top edge and sails over the rope.

Smith is into the 90s.

96th over – Akash Deep is still operating

Jon Healy profile image

Four. Smith clips fine off his thigh and away to the rope. Time to get out the hypercolour because he’s into the 80s.

An awkward little dab outside off and the ball squirts out past the slips. The batters want three, but Cummins has dropped his bat in turning for the third. So he settles for two.

Smith turns an easy single.

Cop that! Cummins backs away and uppercuts for four over the slips. Absolutely completely in control.

Four more! Akash is trying to pepper him, but Cummins sees him coming and backs away to cut through cover for another boundary.

He’s motored to 34 off 40. Just need to keep him away from Bumrah.

95th over – Cummins getting ready for a peppering

Jasprit Bumrah returns and there’s a short leg in place straight away. There’s also a deep fine leg and a deep third man.

Bumrah starts with a length ball and Cummins defends off the shoulder of the bat. He’s waiting for the bumper.

There it is and it almost comes off. A really good short ball up into the armpit of Cummins, who gloves it away just too fine for Jaiswal at short leg.

Smith gets a look and skips across the stumps to leave. The ball collects his pad flap but it’s nowhere near the stumps.

Smith pushes a quick single and Cummins has one ball to make it through. And he just evades another bouncer.

94th over – Akash to Smith

Jon Healy profile image

Oh a very near miss as Smith paws at a wide one and he’s furious with himself. Not sure if it’s the shot selection or the execution, but he’s lucky to still be there.

Akash tries a bouncer to end the over, but it’s not as well directed as his effort to Cummins and Smith barely has to move to get out of the way.

93rd over – Cummins has the strike against Bumrah

Jon Healy profile image

He’s still threatening the outside edge.

A sharp bouncer from Bumrah and Cummins doesn’t worry about playing at it this time, just ducking out of the way.

Another short ball and this time he fends it away. A short leg would have gobbled that up if he was there. A leg slip goes in.

But it’s the double bluff and Bumrah fires in the stock delivery, which swings all over the place and just misses the outside edge and the top of off.

92nd over – Akash comes in to Cummins

Jon Healy profile image

Good work from Australia’s skipper to use the pace of Akash, open the face of the bat and take two more through gully.

Another no ball from Akash as Cummins turns a single off his thigh.

Smith tries to follow suit, but misses with the bat and gets up the other end as the ball balloons off his thigh pad.

Shot! That’s a perfect drive between cover and mid-off from Cummins. All hands and a good base to start from.

Akash tries the bouncer and Cummins hooks well to deep backward square for one more.

91st over – Steve Smith is on 78, facing Jasprit Bumrah

Jon Healy profile image

He’s still leaving outside off, not moving forward at Bumrah as much as he was to Akash.

And he’s beaten outside off. A great ball from Bumrah, squaring up Smith and just missing the edge.

The Indians go up as the ball beats Smith’s outside edge and makes a noise on the way through the Rishabh Pant. But it was all thigh pad.

And Bumrah beats him again to end the over. He’s all over Smith from this end.

90th over – Akash Deep comes in to Pat Cummins

Jon Healy profile image

He beats the outside edge first up.

Good running from Cummins, pushing onto the front foot and taking off for a quick single to cover. The way he bats — so low and pushing forward — means he almost always finds himself in a good position to go for a run after the shot.

There’s a lot of swing away from Smith, but the line is too wide.

Bang! Smith walks towards Akash and follows a wide one with his hands, clattering it through cover for four.

And he keeps the strike for the next over with a little dab to the leg side.

89th over – OK, here’s Jasprit Bumrah

Jon Healy profile image

Cummins gets a single to give the fans what they want: Smith vs Bumrah.

He’s watchful against the danger man.

Four. A thick edge from Smith and again it doesn’t carry, spraying wide of second slip.

88th over – Akash Deep is coming in from the other end

Jon Healy profile image

Jasprit Bumrah started with the new ball yesterday, but doesn’t take it after a good night’s sleep?

Interesting choice. If Rohit Sharma wanted to get Mohammed Siraj into the attack, he still could have started with Bumrah from one end and Siraj at the other.

Why is the strike bowler not on? Hopefully it’s just a change of ends for the former captain.

Smith is leaving outside off and defending off his pads.

He tries an on drive and almost spoons the ball dangerously to mid-off, but it falls safely.

87th over – We’re ready to go with Mohammed Siraj to Steve Smith

Jon Healy profile image

And he’s off the mark for day two, getting squared up, as is his wont, and squirting a single away to the off side to move to 69.

Four! Cummins guides a wide out-swinger from Siraj behind point and this new ball races off the bat and away to the boundary.

Three more for Cummins as he works off his hip and Washington Sundar’s misfield turns what should have been a dot ball into three.

A good start for Australia and no good for India and Siraj.

Disappointed Kohli fans

Jon Healy profile image

Kohli had my respect up until yesterday’s incident. Got off far too lightly given the context. Sends the wrong message to aspiring young players and players alike.

– Mark

I used to admire Kohli but no more. He gives the impression of arrogance and anger. I find him difficult to watch.

– Carolyn

Quick question, Mark and Carolyn,

This is a little more aggro, but is this not pretty on brand for what Kohli’s been doing the past decade?

‘That’s just cricket’: Konstas on Kohli clash

Jon Healy profile image

The Aussie rookie spoke very well about everything that went on on day one, including not making too much of a fuss about the run-in with his hero, Virat Kohli.

Kohli’s grading

So 20% match fee must be maximum available penalty for on field behaviour violations? Not sure there is much that can be worse than deliberate physical contact to intimidate?

– Chris

Here is Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct governing contact between players:

Any form of inappropriate physical contact is prohibited in cricket.

Without limitation, Players will breach this regulation if they deliberately, recklessly and/or negligently walk or run into or shoulder another Player or Umpire. When assessing the seriousness of the breach, the following factors (without limitation) shall be taken into account: (i) the context of the particular situation, including, without limitation, whether the contact was deliberate (i.e. intentional), reckless, negligent, and/or avoidable; (ii) the force of the contact; (iii) any resulting injury to the person with whom contact was made; and (iv) the person with whom contact was made.

Levels 1 and 2 are reserved for contact between players (and player support personnel), while Levels 3 and 4 are for contact with umpires and match referees.

Kohli was charged with a Level 1 offence for his, which feels low to me.

For anyone who missed it, here’s the incident in question:

The Konstas Kraze

Jon Healy profile image

If you want a lovely wrap-up of the frenetic first morning of the Boxing Day Test, Dean Bilton has you covered.

His innings, which somehow lasted only 65 balls and a little over 90 minutes, was scarcely believable. Phones across the country were lighting up, each message from every friend or family member conveying the same basic theme — “can you believe this guy?”.

The mark of a truly great athlete is their ability to make spectators feel things. That usually requires the combination of exceptional deeds on the most significant stages, but performed with a certain level of swagger and personality.

By that definition Konstas is following a rare path.

Virat Kohli’s punishment confirmed

Virat Kohli blows a kiss to the crowd.

In case you missed it, India great Virat Kohli made a goose of himself on day one by shirtfronting a child who was too good at cricket for his liking.

His shoulder on Sam Konstas earned him merely a Level 1 charge from the ICC for violating the rules around inappropriate physical contact on the field, which equates to him being fined 20 per cent of his match fee.

So, any suggestion of a ban was woefully off the mark.

ABC Sport commentator Darren Lehmann has made his thoughts clear…

Probably worth tuning in to the live radio coverage to hear his thoughts today.
