Brenton Wood, singer behind 1967 hit The Oogum Boogum Song, dies at 83

American singer-songwriter Brenton Wood has died at the age of 83, Variety and TMZ have reported.

Born Alfred Jesse Smith, the entertainer is best known for the 1967 hit The Oogum Boogum Song, which has been featured in a range of popular movies and TV shows.

The performer’s manager, Manny Gallegos, confirmed the news to the US media outlet.

Gallegos said Wood died from natural causes and was surrounded by his family at his home in California.
