The Scottish Prison Service today said bunk beds have been removed from prison cells as part off a commitment to rapid and systemic change following the deaths of two young people in custody.

Katie Allan and William Lindsay took their own lives whilst behind bars at Her Majesty’s Prison and Young Offenders Institute Polmont, near Falkirk.

The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) said today it accepted all of the recommendations made in a sheriff’s determination following a Fatal Accident Inquiry into their deaths in full.

The organisation said it is committed to a range of actions which will be enduring, impactful, and lifesaving, and that there will be “an overhaul” of the body’s suicide prevention policy, Talk To Me.

The decisions have been taken based on the advice of independent experts, and there will be additional protective support for young people in custody in their first 72 hours, while other work will be carried out to make their rooms as safe as possible.

SPS have also introduced concern lines into every establishment in Scotland, which friends, family members, and support agencies, can call to raise a concern directly with staff on the hall.
