Armed police locked down a residential street in Edinburgh this afternoon.

Officers were called to Firrhill Drive in the Oxgangs area after the alarm was raised at around 2pm on Saturday.

One concerned local reported seeing several armed response units – and an image shared with Edinburgh Live showed the street closed off by officers.

The resident said those in the area were unable to access the road due to a cordon being erected.

The nature of the incident so far remains unclear, but it’s understood police have since left the scene.

The resident said: “The road was closed by police and four armed response units were there until 4.45pm when the road opened back up.

“It was scary. I was going to walk my dog but I went back inside after hearing about incident and seeing armed police on what is normally quiet street.”

Police Scotland have been approached for comment.
