One Tripadvisor reviewer said: “No restaurant or cafe is dog friendly. The only place you can sit with them is the corridor outside the Garden Cafe.”
An irate guest has blasted Perthshire’s world-renowned Gleneagles Hotel, questioning its dog-friendly credentials.
The five-star haunt of the rich and famous – where dogs can stay in guests rooms at a cost of £100 per night per dog – has come in for flak on global tourism review site Tripadvisor in recent weeks.
The animals however are not allowed in restaurant or bar areas – or in the adjacent luxury Glenmor lodges.
The angry dog owner – in a post dated February 2025 – said: “While I can understand the reasoning at times, why bother claiming to be dog-friendly at all?
“Just say it how it is: we don’t allow dogs, and accept the reduction in profit that comes with it.”
The Tripadvisor contributor ‘Mel’ from Edinburgh said they were a regular customer and accused Gleneagles of becoming less dog-friendly since the pandemic.
The post stated: “The thing that frustrates us most as dog lovers and owners is that the hotel is probably the only place on earth that has become less dog friendly since Covid.
“While the hotelier billionaires pleasure in charging an absurd (£100) surplus for owners wishing to bring their dogs, they don’t actually allow the dogs into anywhere but the corridor.”
The reviewer added: “No restaurant or cafe is dog friendly. The only place you can sit with them is the corridor outside the Garden Cafe.
“And in terms of dog walks…no dogs are allowed on the Glenmor estate nearby the hotel, nor are they allowed anywhere near the falconry or the gundog area for the most part of the day.”
The Gleneagles website states that the £100 per night stay, for dogs up to the size of a labrador, provides a dog bed, foam duvet, plastic floor mats with bowls and a poop scoop, but owners have to bring their own dog food.
Single occupancy kennels are also available at a cost of £54 per night per dog for the first three nights and £45 per night thereafter.
But another Tripadvisor review, from August 2020, described them as “a holding cell” with no natural light or outdoor space and that dogs are only let out for “a short time” in the morning.
A Gleneagles spokesperson said this week: “We’re committed to providing an outstanding experience for everyone who comes to Gleneagles.
“From individuals, couples and groups to multi-generational families – who come to stay, dine, attend events, or enjoy leisure activities – we cater to a diverse range of guests and are respectful of, and attentive to, everyone’s expectations, needs and levels of comfort.
“This includes being sensitive to different people’s perspectives about being in close proximity to dogs as well as being mindful of guests with allergies.
“Access to our restaurants is for assistance dogs only, however, all our canine guests receive a warm welcome and can join their owners in a range of public areas in the hotel, including tables close to The Garden Café which serves food throughout the day.
“They also have space to roam and play in the acres of countryside just outside the hotel and enjoy a safe and cosy bed for the night, either in the comfort of their owner’s room on in our on-site kennels, which are subject to rigorous annual assessment by the Animal Welfare Team at Perth and Kinross Council.”
