Gamers have been pulling out their hair waiting for GTA 6- and they’re not happy to be waiting longer

The release date for one of the most widely anticipated games ever- Grand Theft Auto VI -has been delayed until next May, leaving fans of the game ‘furious’. The game was supposed to be released at some point this year, but it has been announced today, May 2, that gamers will have to wait another 12 months to play GTA 6.

Rockstar Games told fans it needed extra time to “deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve”. Details of the game remain a mystery, besides one teaser trailer for the game that was released in December 2023, which rapidly reached over 100 million views.

The series is one of the most-played ever, as the most recent Grand Theft Auto game, GTA 5 is thought to be the second-best selling video game in history.

While most details of GTA 6 are yet to be revealed, the trailer showed two main protagonists, along with the game’s setting Leonida, which is inspired by Florida.

In its statement posted on X, Rockstar said: “Grand Theft Auto VI is now set to release on May 26, 2026.

“We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.

“With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception.

“We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”

The company has developed a reputation for having huge gaps between release dates, and this 12-year gap since GTA 5’s release has sparked a wave of jokes- and complaints- online.

A gamer hit out at the predictability of the situation, saying: “Twitter Flipping Out About GTA 6 Being Delayed Like It Wasn’t The Most Obvious Thing Ever”.

A second said: “finding out gta 6 got delayed right as i wake up… it’s the worst way i could have started this day”.

And this isn’t the first time Rockstar Games have delayed the release of a highly anticipated game, as they did the same with 2018’s Red Dead Redemption 2, which was the gaming company’s last big new release.
