Paralympic gold medallist and world record holder Madison de Rozario will take the stage at UN Women Australia’s International Women’s Day (IWD) event at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on 7 March 2025 in Brisbane.

This event coincides with the 30th anniversary of the UN’s Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action on gender equality, making it a landmark occasion for celebrating women’s contributions globally.

De Rozario is not only an exceptional athlete but also a strong voice for inclusivity in sports.

Having contracted transverse myelitis at the age of four, resulting in paralysis from the waist down, she began wheelchair racing at 12 and debuted at the Paralympics by 15, becoming the youngest Australian Paralympian at the 2008 Beijing Games. Her journey embodies the importance of resilience and representation.

De Rozario expressed her commitment to the IWD cause: “I’m honoured to join UN Women Australia’s IWD event in Brisbane to participate in this important conversation about equality – its relevance and impact in all our lives and careers – including sports.”

Alongside her, the event will also feature a live broadcast of Celeste Barber’s keynote from Sydney. Known for her #CelesteChallengeAccepted social media campaign, Barber brings her humour and unique perspective on social issues to the day’s proceedings.

Simone Clarke, CEO of UN Women Australia, highlighted the significance of de Rozario’s participation, saying: “De Rozario’s journey champion is truly inspiring. With Celeste Barber joining us live from Sydney, we have a truly powerhouse lineup for our Brisbane audience.”

As one of the largest International Women’s Day events in Australia, UN Women Australia’s IWD gatherings raise critical funds to support global programs empowering women and girls.

With initiatives in over 100 countries, UN Women provides resources in technology, leadership training, and safe spaces, supporting women and girls in their pursuit of education and community leadership.
