Thai locals have shared the apocalyptic scenes as huge 7.7 tremors reduce high-rise buildings to rubble after the “significant” earthquake hit Bangkok.
A massive 7.7 magnitude earthquake has hit Thailand this morning leaving high-rise buildings were reduced to dust and rubble as locals share the apocalyptic scenes.
Water was seen cascading over the top of luxury flats in the Bangkok city centre as buildings shook and people trying to capture the tremors were left unable to stand, reports the Mirror.
Originating in Myanmar, the tremors has taken a dramatic toll on the Thai capital as people capturing the shock earthquake struggle to stay on their feet.
One video of a building site posted to social media this morning showed a construction site being torn from its foundations as workers ran for safety.
Automatic measuring by the China Earthquake Network Centre and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) have pinpointed the magnitude at 7.7, adding it struck 16 kilometres (10 miles) north northwest of the town of Sagaing, in Myanmar.
The first tremors were felt a around 12.50pm, with the strongest shaking followed by 6.4 magnitude aftershocks, which hit just 12 minutes after the first event.
The USGS has said that buildings in Myanmar and Thailand are especially vulnerable to the effects of earthquakes.
The service noted: “Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are vulnerable to earthquake shaking, though resistant structures exist.
“The predominant vulnerable building types are informal (metal, timber, GI etc.) and unreinforced brick masonry construction.”
Unconfirmed reports from emergency services attending a building collapse from Phahonyothin Fire and Rescue Station suggested several people were left trapped, with officers preparing to “provide urgent assistance”.
Another clip posted to X, showed the earthquake’s epicentre, a landmark local bridge was similarly torn apart.
The service and Germany’s GFZ centre for geosciences said the incident was at a shallow 6.2 miles, with an epicentre in neighbouring Myanmar, according to preliminary reports.
The epicentre was in central Myanmar, 30 miles east of the city of Monywa. There were no immediate reports of the effect of the earthquake in Myanmar, which is in the middle of a civil war.
The greater Bangkok area is home to more than 17 million people, many of whom live in high-rise apartments.
Automatic measuring by the China Earthqake Network Centre and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) have pinpointed the magnitude at 7.7, adding it struck 16 kilometres (10 miles) north northwest of the town of Sagaing, in Myanmar.
Alarms went off in buildings as the earthquake hit around 1.30pm local time, and startled residents were evacuated down staircases of high-rise buildings and hotels in densely populated central Bangkok.
They remained in the streets, seeking shade from the midday sun in the minutes after the quake.
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
