Three appear in court charged with murder after man ‘slashed to death’ in Scots village

Three people have appeared in court charged with murder after a man was allegedly “slashed to death” in South Lanarkshire.

Joe Jnr Buchanan, 35, was found dead on Springhill Street, Douglas, near Lanark, on Sunday, April 13, 2025.

Emergency services raced to the scene at around 8.35pm after reports of a disturbance, but tragically, he was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival.

Following the incident, Christopher Mullen Jnr, 21, Christopher Mullen Snr, 40, and Ryan Mullen, 41, were arrested and charged in connection with his death.

The trio appeared at Airdrie Sheriff Court all charged with murder on Tuesday.

They made no plea and were remanded in custody to appear again at court within eight days.

Images taken from the scene following the incident showed a police cordon in place with an ambulance parked nearby and forensics combing a paved area between houses.

Joe Jnr Buchanan, was described by his family as a man with “a heart of gold.”

In a statement they said: “We want to thank everyone who has shown support to the family.

“Joe had a heart of gold, and we would appeal to anyone who has any information to come forward. We would also ask that our privacy is respected at this difficult time.”

Loved ones were left shocked following the tragic news and messages were left on social media. Jen Stewart said: “Rest easy Joe. Thinking of your family.”

Jillian Jarvie said: “So sad RIP Joe Jnr Buchanan. Thinking of the family at this very sad time.” Shannon Mccabe said: “Rip Joe Buchanan, fly high. Gone but not forgotten.”

While, Marc Mccabe wrote: “Rip Joe. Canny believe I’m reading this. Had some right good times together lad. Shocked to read this news.”

Roisin Muldoon added: “Rip Joe Jnr Buchanan.”
